Chalkboard Timelapse

January 05, 2015  •  6 Comments

This is a time-lapse of the making of a chalkboard I created for Chair 9, the aprés ski bar in The Little Nell, Aspen's five-star hotel.

The footage, captured and edited by Aspen 82, was shot over the course of a week, from early morning into the evening of each day.

I like seeing, in a highly-condensed 20 seconds, what took days to create. Thousands of chalked lines and curves; countless micro-choices regarding color, content, shape, etc; and the rising and setting of the sun.

Before starting on the chalkboard itself, I worked out the general composition in my sketchbook:

A few screen-captures pulled from the time-lapse:

The maître d' from the restaurant helped me out one day, chalking in the flying-snow highlights.

The final artwork, measuring approximately 14 feet wide by 4 feet tall:

Cheryl G, so good to hear from you! It's been years. Thank you for taking the time to stop by The Little Nell to view the artwork in person, and to leave a note here. Appreciating the depth to which the art touched you. Thank you for being open to it.

Annie, thanks for your comments - and, of course, the invitation to create my artwork in your beautiful hotel. It was a week I shall not forget...

Steve and I dropped by one evening to see your work and loved it. As beautiful as Aspen is in the winter, this scene is more beautiful. It stokes the imagination. Now that I've seen this blog and time lapse movie, I think I'll have to go back during the day to appreciate it some more. Thanks for this beauty!

So fortunate to have this majestic artwork in Aspen at The Little Nell!
Lends uniqueness and a very mystical element to the Chair 9 space! Serious crowd pleaser. Size of the piece is just astounding. as is the level of thought and deliberate nature of each detail.
WOW. Bravo Bryce!

Thanks, Amber. Yes, this was one huge project! What I ought to include is a shot of the sweet outdoors hot tub I soaked my weary body in every night.
