About this Work

I was super excited when I found this bust in a sculpture garden - the stallion’s musculature, the intense expression, how it felt to the touch, even the solid heft. My hands couldn’t keep off it! And envisioning delicate figures wrapping around the curves was enticing.

The Greeks could feel the relationship between horses and the power of the sea. So do I. And so I called in the ocean via mermaids, starfish, jellies, and koi.

I first painted the bust all black, like the deepest dark ocean, and then from below a spray can wash of purple and red. I intentionally didn’t make the contrast strong, as I didn’t want the surface paint to compete with the topography of the sculpture. So the ink figures are subtle, as if they are obscured in a roll of incoming waves. I particularly love the sensual nature of the mermaids’ painted hair flowing into the shadows of the sculpted mane.

This bust is sealed for UV and weather protection, and ready to roam indoors or outdoors.
