About this Work

Ah… The feeling of just sitting around with others, drinking cokes from the bottle, the shared feeling of just… being.

When painting this, I was in the midst of feeling the primate nature of my body, and the beautiful intelligence of my limbic system. And the odd way that I as a human can forget my primate roots, and imagine we homo sapiens as being entirely unrelated to all other species. So not true. Our primate roots are strong in us! We haven’t transcended these roots, nor will we. We’ll always be primates, or: primates-plus. And it’s essential for me to feel my animal self, my similarities to our primate cousins, from the elegance of our social webs to our innate need for connection, intimacy, touch.

As an artist, I really need to paint whatever is coming to me. I’m not trying to make a point with the subject matter - it’s not coming from a conceptual place, I’m just… feeling. And the words “self honesty” - mostly hidden now under many splashy washes of paint - speak to this. We are primal-spiritual. Nothing fancy. Pretty simple.
